Courses and Workshops

This is a list of possible workshops and courses, sorted by their length. According to the complexity of the topic or the amounts of time needed, courses and workshops are grouped in One-Day, Two-Day and Half-Day events. Please do not hesitate to ask if you are looking for a different topic or a different focus topic in your workshop!

One-Day Workshops

Introduction to Hand Sewing

The participants all sew a "sampler" piece that features the most important stitches, seam types, neatening and hemming methods. The sampler can then serve as helper for decisions about seams and hems in the future, when garment sewing projects are made.

Introduction to Medieval Embroidery

This course teaches the basic methods and stitches for historical embroidery, using the correct materials - fine linen fabric, plant-dyed untwisted silks and plant-dyed wool as well as gold thread. Pattern drawing and pattern transferring methods are also explained, and patterns can be pre-drawn using iron gall ink and a quill.

Counted work and free-form embroidery, as well as gold embroidery, are all introduced for a full survey about the techniques available to the medieval embroiderer.

For those wishing to work larger than the very small medieval original scale, a "double-size option" is available.

Filet Netting

In this course, participants learn all the techniques necessary to make a medieval hairnet in filet netting technique: Casting on, closing to the round, working the increase round, and working larger mesh on the same size stick.

Filet netting is a technique that is almost forgotten, but makes for a spectacular demonstration in Living History situations - and results in beautiful nets that can be worn plain or embroidered with filet embroidery.

Fingerloop Braiding

This efficient, stunning braiding technique trains finger coordination while making beautiful narrow wares. Starting with a simple braid, participants learn basic principles of this technique before switching to more complicated, patterned bands and bands that are made by several persons working together.

Medieval Tablet Weaving: Brocading

While modern tablet weavers often rely heavily on patterns pre-configured by threading the tablets, medieval tablet weaving is usually done with much thinner threads than modern interpretations, and often using brocade wefts as a patterning technique.

This course aims to bring back this (deceptively simple!) historical technique. It is suitable for absolute beginners as well as persons already tablet weaving.

Medieval Tablet Weaving: Introduction to Twill Patterning

In contrast to threaded-in patterns, twill patternings mean little work when threading the tablets and a much greater liberty at weaving different patterns and pattern elements.

This course is introducing the participants to the basic principles and mechanics of twill patterning in tablet weaving, enabling them to design patterns themselves - but also giving a much deeper understanding of the weaving technique and underlying structure that is helpful for all tablet weaving.

This course is suitable for adventurous beginners.

Two-Day Workshops

Tailoring Weekend

Historical tailoring, as far as it can be reconstructed, is fundamentally different from modern tailoring. In this weekend or two-day course, each participant works on his or her own garment of choice - using historical tailoring techniques.

Half-Day Workshops/Mini-Courses

The following topics are all suitable for a half-day course. Of course you can also have them in greater detail as a full day event - or you can mix and match several mini-courses for a weekend event.

Spinning with a Hand Spindle

A short introduction in historical wool preparation techniques is followed by teaching the participants how to use a hand-spindle and a distaff for historical spinning.

Fingerloop Braiding

Getting a taste of this fascinating braiding technique is possible in a mini-course, where you will learn a few basic braids.

Other topics and mixtures of topics are possible - please get in contact with your ideas or wishes!
