Technology in Archaeology!

This landed in my email inbox yesterday:

Dear all,

We are glad to inform you that it will be possible to follow the international workshop An integration of use-wear and residues analysis for the identification of the function of archaeological stone tools, “La Sapienza” University of Rome, 5th – 7th March 2012  live on the website www.archaeologicaltraces.org.

Everybody is welcome to participate, actively or not, in the discussion sessions using the chat.
So in case you read this in time, you can have a look. In case you are too late (or not interested in stone tool use wear analysis), you can still join me in thinking this a really awesome and really cool thing. Live streaming and interactive discussion on conferences! Welcome to the future! Yay!

Oh, what a cool idea! Any chance of doing that with the textile forum? I *want* to go, but I am looking at my work-travel calender and seeing how little time I am home this year, and looking at my budget and how little has been saved, yet, since starting this job, and have been thinking it might be the wiser course of action to stay home in August. But if I could attend virtually (perhaps skype or a G+ hangout if not a more dedicated system) for at least the talks, I wouldn't feel quite so disappointed at missing it...

I would be willing to offer a small donation to the cost of the event for the chance to attend on a virtual basis...

That is such a cool idea!

On a related note, have you read Katrin Struckmeyer's thesis on tracewear on the bone tools from Feddersen Wierde? (VML Verlag, 2011)? She's found evidence of several tools being used for textile production.
