Rigid heddles are used to weave simple or patterned bands in plain-weave, usually warp-dominated plain weave (so the weft thread disappears completely). Bands of this type were found, for instance, in the salt mines of Hallstatt in Austria and date to the Iron Age.

The heddles are c 15.5 cm wide, 10 cm high and about 7 mm thick. With 24 slits and 23 holes, they enable you to weave wider bands. The slits and holes are about 1.5 mm in width/diameter.

The heddles are handmade in Germany, from regionally sourced woods. Wood types available are maple (partly with quite dark patterning) and wild service tree (sorbus torminalis). The latter is related to the rowan tree; it has a beautiful, very finely structured wood with a light reddish to quite dark colouring.
