The woad plant was the medieval source for blue dye for textiles. Today it has mostly been succeeded by the indigo plant, which yields more dye per plant. The pigment, indigo or indigotin, is identical in both plants, but the accompanying secondary chemicals in the woad plant usually lead to a different hue of blue than the indigo plant.

Woad is a biennial plant; once established, it will seed itself. It grows in form of a rosette of leaves, sprouting the blooming stalk in the second year. Leaves are harvested in the first year, and there can be multiple harvests per plant, though dye content decreases with each harvest.

Apart from yielding dyestuff, the plant also feeds bees and wild bees.

The bag contains 1 g of seed, which is about 160-170 individual seeds.
