The earliest knitted pieces we have evidence for are knitted in the round; they are narrow tubes found in Egypt, dated to about 5th or 6th c AD. One example of these tubes is published in: Cardon, Dominique. "Chiffons dans le désert: textiles des dépotoirs de Maximianon et Krokodilô." La route de Myos Hormos 2 (2003): 619-59.

These pieces are a special variation called compound knitting, where each new stitch passes through two previous rows instead of just one (as in common modern knitting). This results in a thicker, squishier textile.

Unfortunately we do not know what these tubes were used for, and how exactly they were made - but it is quite easily possible to make them with help of a knitting nancy. Instructions on how this is done are included.
